Animals Used for Teaching in NZ

Learn about how animals are used for teaching purposes in NZ.

Animals are sadly still used in harmful ways for teaching purposes in New Zealand schools and universities.

The harmful use of animals for teaching purposes is where animals are forced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, injury, distress, or death, and that is not meant to benefit that specific animal involved.

Common examples include using animals in:

  • Animal dissections
  • Behavioural experiments
  • Exercises teaching surgical skills

At NZAVS we advocate for the use of animal-free alternatives to educate students. The goal is to save animals while also creating safe, inclusive spaces for students to learn in.
